Sign Language Club Set Up In College
Bandar Seri Begawan - Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (MDPMAMB) has become the first educational institution to start its own Sign Language Club as part of the extra curricular activities.
Students learning the sign language
Ms Tan Moi Chan, a math teacher, initiated the club. The students are being coached by Hajah Mariani binti Abdullah, special education unit officer under the students hearing impaired programme.
The students are learning the sign language for the National Anthem and are expected to perform this newfound skill at the school.
" I hope the students while studying in the college, can also learn a new language. It's also a good way to express oneself between students as well as teachers.
" Sign language is actually the second most common language used in the world.
"Students equipped with the sign language skill can better communicate with students of special needs," said Ms Tan.
The club aims to provide the club members the basic technique of the sign language and in the near future face the prospect of working with special persons.
The club officially started on March 30, 2010 with 30 club members. The first elected president is Nur Jazilah Zaidin. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

The debating teams will be awarded marks, which will then be tallied in a league format. The top two teams from the preliminaries will proceed to the Debate Final on Tuesday, June 19, 2010 at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, Empire Hotel & Country Club.
The winning team of the finals will be awarded a trophy and cash prize of $2,000, whilst the runner-up team will be awarded a trophy and cash prize of $1,000. The Best Speaker from the preliminary stage will also receive $300. Furthermore, the recipients will also have exclusive opportunities to collaborate on future environmental initiatives with the BSP and UBD.
The BSP UBD Green Debate project between BSP and UBD marks the revivification of relationships between one of the largest energy companies in Asia, and the leading educational institution in Brunei Darussalam. Study in Australia Roadshow
Saturday, May 22, 2010
Saturday, 22May 2010 – At 2pm, around 25 students from both AE and BE attended the roadshow that was facilitated by the Higher Education Unit (HEU) held in the Conference Room. The Roadshow was presented by Safwanah Noor from HRD Services Global Education Link, which are the official representatives for a number of Australian’s universities and colleges.
In Australian universities or colleges, there are 2 semesters.
"In each semester, you are allowed to take a minimum of 3 subjects while the maximum are 5 subjects, ” explained Safwanah Noor, the main presenter of this roadshow. She also highlighted that at the end of a semester, there will be exams. Hence, in the next upcoming semester we could take new subjects which are completely different from our previous courses. This will sum up to a maximum of 10 subjects in 2 semesters.
It was also interesting to note that Australia is now a viable option for students who want to take competitive courses in health sciences since UK no longer accept international applicants.
Dr. Smita, the general manager of HRD highlighted that if we are going to study overseas, we will obtain a slightly different type of education that will help us when applying jobs. The competitions for the job decreases since we have more advantage, especially if the position are quite popular.
“Though it is not easy to get a scholarship or to be accepted by universities since the requirement is quite high but it is not impossible to be obtained,” she highlighted again. As Dr. Smita said, “Once you graduate, you will be proud of your education.”

Maktab Duli Going Green
Young members of Maktab Duli's Environmentally Friendly Club collecting waste recycled as part of their energy conservation project Bandar Seri Begawan - From recyclables to reusables. This was the mission of 30 students from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah (Maktab Duli) in Gadong as they collected recyclable materials and waste in their school compound over the past week to be recycled by a local company, Daijo recycling. The 30 students are part of the 70 active members of the colleges' Environmentally Friendly Club (EFC).
The club supervisor, Dk Jaliha Pg Sahbudin, said the proceeds of the sale of the recycled waste would then be used to produce reusable bags bearing the college's logo as well as friendly message on encouraging shoppers to use reusable bags as their next project.
Use of reusable bags is being encouraged in the Sultanate after it marked its first No Plastic Day on May 3.
"These bags will be sold to the students and teachers in the college and they can use them to replace the plastic bags when they go shopping in supermarkets, thus helping the environment by reducing the number of plastic waste," said the club supervisor.
Dk Jaliha said the activities conducted yesterday were to encourage the young club members to inculcate a habit of conserving energy that they can practise in their daily lives, thus saving the environment from further destruction, and in the end, lead by example for the rest of the community in the country.
"Aside from doing our part in conserving the environment, we want to convey our beliefs and concerns to the public by starting with the students in the college, and then on to the students' parents and siblings who will later on pass the awareness to their friends, colleagues at work and neighbours, as a way to get our message across," she said.
"Through recycling, we are significantly cutting down the consumption of energy that would've been used to produce new materials, and at the same time slow down the process of depletion of resources," she added.
Members of EFC collecting old newspapers to be recycled as part of their green initiative Aside from collecting recyclables, the students also did their part in conserving energy and protecting the environment by recycling wastes and planting crops organically in their campus.
Crops were planted near the school's old female hostel. The crops which consisted of various types of vegetables such as watercress and long beans were planted organically as Dk Jaliha said the benefits of organically-grown vegetables were far greater than the conventionally-grown due to the absence of various poisons such as pesticides.
"It's good to grow your own crops because you are assured that you've grown them organically and can always guarantee that your food is safer and healthier. Additionally, you can also control the amount of vegetables you use for your cooking, thus preventing food waste," said Dk Jaliha.
"Furthermore, you save energy (fuel) from travelling to buy vegetables from the market, and growing vegetables using organic fertilisers will not deteriorate the soil. Finally, gardening is good for your health, especially if you want to keep in shape," she added.
Two female students from the club tending their organically-grown watercress as part of their energy conservation project
Dk Jaliha went on to say that planting fruits and vegetables organically at home may be slightly less cheaper than buying them front the supermarkets, but the environmental and health costs from the conventionally-grown crops far exceeds the organically-grown ones in the long term.
Asra Nursyakillah Rabaha, president of the club said that the project was a tremendous success for the club this year and is planning to make it an ongoing activity in the college.
"The response have been very positive. We've had nonmember students contributing recyclable wastes to us as a sign of support for our drive towards helping the environment. We also have parents of students who came over today to deliver their recyclable wastes," she told The Brunei Times.
The 19-year-old said that that the experience gained from conducting the various projects and activities have been highly beneficial and educational for the group, while having tremendous fun engaging them.
Since its formation in 2008, the club has been involved in running several projects on environment conservation, including recycling campaigns, energy conservation and alternative packaging.
Last year, the club made headlines by contributing $890 to Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) in support of the tree planting project to restore the trees in Badas Forest Reserve which were lost to forest fires.

AB talks to Bruneian Students in UK – Armacester
While officiating the Art & Design Exhibition at the Meragang Sixth Form Centre, Education Minister Pehin Dato Hj Abd Rahman said the new education system (SPN21), art was a subject that the ministry encouraged students to take. "Doing art doesn’t mean you’re going to be an artist. You could do art and develop some other skills. For example, if you’re good in drawing and Mathematics, you could become an architect."
"This is the sort of thing we want to develop among our youths. Art is something that is not only creative but involves a lot of hard work, thinking and dreaming."
The minister said that he wanted to develop the talent of the local artists and see them aspire to be on the same stage as their international counterparts.
He added that the ministry was looking into the issue of the shortage of art teachers in the country. "It’s not something which is easy to tackle because (the teachers) themselves have to have dedication and passion for the subject, but we are developing local skills."
Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Rahman also remarked on the introduction of a Fine Arts degree programme at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), stating that it provides an alternative option for students to study art in the country.
After reading the above story a few days ago, I was reminded of an interview I did with a Bruneian postgrad student, Armacester Arsad, who is in the UK doing her MA in Fine Art. Here’s what she had to say:

Tell me a bit about your educational background.
I was a student of Maktab Sains doing Science stream with Art as an extra subject, Ck Hjh Masna who is still teaching in Maktab Sains was my guiding force in the art subject for the whole of my 7 years in that college, she taught me well enough for me to proceed further in art. Went on to do a degree course under Government Scholarship, graduated with a BA(Hons) Fine Art from the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom and now currently under in-service training doing MA Fine Arts at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.

Why did you choose UK, specifically Winchester?
Why I have chosen UK as my place of study? I’m very familiar with the UK already, MA is just a year, i don’t want to waste time being at a place where i would have to spend alot of my time adjusting to the culture and surrounding
why winchester? i like the course content and structure of the course..i believed that it would make full use of my potential if not improve it even more..plus,it’s just an hour away from london thus the main art galleries are within reach..once i’m in WSA,i know i have made the best decision,i’m having a wonderful studying experience here..all of my tutors and staffs are amazing..my classes are all beneficial towards my betterment as an artist and also as an art teacher..
before this,i have been teaching art A-level for 6 years :) and also practice my art on the side, exhibiting works in the uk,malaysia and brunei..

What do you think of the artistic talent in Brunei?
artistic talent in brunei is blossoming..i personally am proud of the G5 group,i love working with them and i’m planning to collaborate with them in the near future..same goes to the already well-established artists of brunei..brunei’s art scene comprises of 2 groups i believe, the already well-established ones (such as the likes of hj padzil, zakaria omar, pg roslan,pg kamarul, marsidi omar,hj dayang..that is just to name a few) and the new G5 artists..my ’sifu’s/mentors are zakaria omar and pg roslan..they’re the ones who exposed me to the brunei art scene..i’m looking forward to do more exhibitions with them soon..

Art has always been "non-mainstream" subject in Brunei and not given much priority by both MOE and many parents do not see Art as a "career" subject. What are your thoughts on this?
i think MOE is starting to alter that mindset abit..during my time it was just the 3 of us who went abroad but now i know the number of students being sent to uk to do art has increased..plus with SPN21,art stands tall with the rest of the subjects being taught in schools..it is well-thought through in terms of structure and content..in terms of career,i believe there are job opportunities..art teachers are still in need and that is a fact..but apart from the education side, there are other opportunities too..one can be designers, one can do videos, animation and contribute to the betterment of our rtb, one can design fabrics/textiles..and the list just goes on..i guess people just need to be educated more on how massive the art area is, and that art is not simply just drawing and painting a beautiful picture..

Oratory Competition Unearths Top Speakers

Students is listening to a speech at the auditorium
Bandar Seri Begawan - It was a day of sheer satisfaction for Pre-U II students Nurul Syadah Samat and Seow Shu En after they emerged victors in the 2'd Oratory Competition organised by the Student Council and Prefects of the Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College.
The event was officiated by Deputy Principal Pg Hjh Mashayu Pg Hj Yusof, who later presented prizes to Nurul Syadah Samat for emerging victorious in the Malay category, Seow Shu En for taking the top spot in the English category, and all other competition winners.
Guest of Honour, Deputy Principal, Cikgu Pg Hjh Mashayu Pg Hj Yusof
Open to all Pre-U II students of the college, the oratory competition aimed to enhance the students' ability in public speaking, while at the same time improve their communication skills. In her speech, the deputy principal pointed out that it is without a doubt imperative to acquire not just good, but excellent public speaking skills in order to communicate well in our daily life, and particularly for students at this stage of their education, it is indeed a plus to have the ability to communicate fluently in both Malay and English.
Being a competent public speaker is essential for every one of us, helping us to further convey our objectives and messages to our audience. Inevitably, it can help us to accomplish our goals, she added. It is vital for the student council and prefects, in their role as leaders, to improve their oratory skills as this would definitely be an 'asset' to them, thus, this competition is a useful platform for them to enhance their public speaking skills.
A speaker needs to be clear and able to express the meaning to the audience. Engagement with the audience is also important, as is determining how the audience reacts, and to an extent, adapting the presentation of the speech to suit the type of audience.
The tone and pitch must be varied to emphasise certain key phrases or in making a point. Additionally, it should be well paced with rhythms and pauses, and at the same time, the body language of the speaker also needs to suit the speech in order to emphasise the points being made.
Meanwhile, the content must be well prepared, structured and coherent, as well as relevant to the topic. It must also follow a logical line of argument or contention. The speaker must be able to persuade through the use of rhetoric, wit and also humour, she said.
"A good speech should be able to move an audience where a speaker wants it to go. Thus, how one persuades is actually at the core of good speeches" she concluded, with hopes that students present in the auditorium would all benefit and gain experience to improve their oratory skills.

Over 330kg of Plastic Bottles Collected On Brunei Beaches
Beach Bunch collected over 730kg of general waste, 140kg of plastic and 2kg of aluminium cans in two hours
Beach Bunch cleaning campaign at Jerudong Beach
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Beach Bunch, an environmental-based society, has so far helped to collect over 330kg of plastic bottles at several beaches in the country. Their latest cleaning campaign was at the Jerudong beach. The whole campaign spanned a total duration of 12 hours and involved about 310 volunteers.
One empty 1.5L plastic bottle weighs approximately 0.04kg, the Beach Bunch said. During the cleanup, a total of 8,300 bottles were collected.
Brunei has a coastline of 161km. Therefore, they can collect about 16,000kg of plastic bottles, i.e. 400,000 plastic bottles.
On the whole, based on their record, the Beach Bunch has helped to pick up some 1.4 tonnes where 1.07 tonnes are general waste including plastic bags and glasses and 0.33 tonnes or 330kg of plastic bottles.
On the world scale, the Beach Bunch told the Sunday Bulletin that the largest identified plastic garbage was not on the land but on the sea. It's known as the Pacific Gyre or the Great Garbage Patch. For more information, check out www.greatgarbagepatch.org.
The Secretary of Beach Bunch, Rizan, said this is plastic bottles alone. He said plastic bags are difficult to collect; they usually end up in the sea. But they have collected mostly plastic bottles, all kind of bottles including detergents.
Marine scientists stated that plastic waste in the oceans poses a potentially devastating long-term toxic threat to the food chain.
According to JASTRE official, Hj Mohd Noor bin Hj Mohd Salleh, plastics are not easily decomposed, some taking even a thousand years, leaving potentially toxic substances. Plastic waste will usually become toxic to the soil and this will in turn affect the food chain.
Therefore, according to him, plastic will never be safe for humans. The only way to make it safe is to recycle it and to reduce its usage. There are biodegradable plastics, which have environmentally friendly composition.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development (Administration & Finance), Hj Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Hj Md Yunos, said the ministry is advocating against the use of plastics by proposing shopping outlets in the country to charge customers for every plastic use, while promoting the use of reusable shopping bags.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Development is organising a 'No Plastic Day' on May 3 asking shops in the country to participate in the cause.
Beach Bunch is a non-government organisation (NGO), which was formerly known as Brunei Beach Bums. It was established last year with a mission to protect the beaches of Brunei from pollution and has embarked on a series of cleaning campaigns around the beaches in Brunei. They have long-term goals in the pipeline to potentially involve SMEs, government agencies and the UN. It's called the Blue Flag, an eco-label for beaches and runs under the Foundation for Environment Education (FEE), a NGO with members in 49 countries as of June 2007.
Blue Flag's partners are EU, UNEP and WTO. According to the Beach Bunch, the flag is given to beaches that meet a specific set of criteria concerning environmental information and education, water quality, safety and services and environmental management. It is designed to raise environmental awareness and increase good environmental.

That Top Ten Of The World Feeling
Khairul Anwar Sabir, Maktab Duli PMAMB 08/09 Bandar Seri Begawan - Top Ten in the World and Top in Brunei for Sociology Brunei-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level achiever Khairul Anwar Sabir wants to emulate his businessman father but would venture into journalism and hopefully own a media company one day.
The Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah student chose to take up a Major in Business and Minor in Communications and pursue his studies at the Sunway University (Malaysia) under a programme called American Degree Transfer where students can study in Malaysia for 18 months and continue another two years in the US.
Speaking to the Borneo Bulletin yesterday, Khairul who is one of the 74 recipients of the Cambridge Outstanding Achiever Awards said first he has to complete his Masters. On his study formula, as he is also working, he said he would allocate an hour a day to revise everything he learned in class that day.
"I don't study 7 to 8 hours a day but what I usually do is I will understand the topics in my terms, make my own notes, so I can understand it better and revise for the exams." This middle child out of three siblings, in doling out advice for his juniors, said 'A' Levels is very much easier than '0' Levels as it specialises in only three to four subjects, "so if you could make the most out of it, I don't see how you can miss".
Khairul, who was a St George's student before transferring to the college, noted that transferring from a private school to public, "you can say it was kind of tough trying to fit in all the disciplines and stuff like that but in the end I managed".
"Teachers at the college are friendly, they guide you through the two years and help you take the next step to university as they have a very good high education unit," added Khairul.
Another achiever who is Top Ten in the World and Top in Brunei in 'AS' General Paper, Mohd Ramzul Majdi Mohd Ramlee of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan College, pointed out that he studies as much on other subjects including environment and politics. Two weeks before the exams, he allocates 2-3 hours a day and during exams, spends 5 to 6 hours daily in his own revision.
On studies abroad, he is eyeing software engineering at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia or Blackpool University in the UK. He thinks Brunei will one day depend wholly on computers to survive and on learning that the ICT industry here is understaffed, he figures software engineering will be in high demand and hopes to work on e-government projects, adding that he has a few designs of his own to try out.
Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School student Dk Nurul Bari' ah Pg Hj Asri who received Top Ten in the World for Commercial Studies at '0' Level has other achievements in the past, namely Best Student (first place) for three consecutive years and also received the PMB Award (school and national level).
Surprised and thankful, she personally thinks that it is a real honour being chosen as one of the achievers, what more being Top Ten in the World. She disclosed that she spends most of her free time studying. Her advice to fellow students sitting for '0' Levels is hard work from early on will pay off in the end. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
