Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 28 students and teachers from 14 private secondary schools benefited yesterday from an oratory workshop, which was organised and conducted by Breda O'Hara-Davies, of CfBT.
What exactly is meant by oratory? According to Ms Breda, oratory is the art of public speaking, specifically in a formal, expressive or forceful manner. The objective of the workshop was to provide tips on how an individual can improve his/her ability to effectively present information to members of the public via public speech.
In part, the oratory workshop will also equip students participating in the 3rd Private Schools English Language Oratory Competition 2010, organised by Yayasan SHHB Secondary School, scheduled to be held in April.
The principal of Yayasan SHHB Secondary School, Dr Loji Roji, in a brief speech, said that Yayasan SHHB Secondary School will be hosting the oratory competition which will be carrying the theme - `21st Century Skills is a must for today's students'.
He said, "We had done quite well in past competitions and we have to move forward. We wanted to extend invitations to schools from Kota Kinabalu, Labuan and Miri and perhaps even extend the competition further within the region to also include Singapore."
The workshop's host, Breda O'Hara-Davies, comes from Ireland and has been teaching in Brunei since 1997 at Maktab Duli, where she is involved in coaching debaters and preparing delegates for the ISB Borneo Global Issues Conference.
