An Oxbridge Roadshow was held yesterday for students to equip themselves with the knowledge of what is needed to be selected to join the top institutions. It also aimed to empower, inspire and motivate the prospective students to work hard to make sure they qualify for entry to these prestigious universities, said Acting Deputy Principal Administration and SM Academic of the Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College in her opening speech at the Oxbridge Roadshow yesterday.
Held at the college's VIP room, she disclosed that the event aims to share knowledge of those 'living the dream' with everyone regarding Oxford and Cambridge Universities, which are renowned for world-class quality education.
The University of Oxford and University of Cambridge are regarded as two of the best universities not only in the UK but in the world. They are also produced an impressive and notable alumni that included world leaders, scientists and influential individuals. The college's students should aspire and dream of attending these universities.
She noted that the event yesterday was the third of its kind conducted by the college, and she expressed her pride in announcing that for the first time this year, the college has had, not one, but two students accepted to Cambridge University, namely students Chan Chung Sun and Edwin Lim Jian Hong.
Chan Chung Sun had participated in the previous two Oxbridge Roadshows as potential applicant to Oxbridge and yesterday he was present not only as a speaker for Oxbridge but most importantly as an icon of success as he gained entry to Cambridge University this year.
Congratulating Chan she noted, "We at Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah are indeed very proud of his accomplishment. Our congratulation also goes to his parents, all his teachers, and the college administration with its higher education advisers and everyone else involved in his way to this achievement. May this be a motivation to all students as this shows that it's always possible to achieve the best in your studies. And most importantly, this goes to show that awareness and knowledge is vital in attaining your dreams."
In her words of appreciation to the invited speakers for taking their time out to share their knowledge and advice aspiring students, she added that their achievements and enthusiasm in sharing their experience with the rest of them yesterday, was indeed a source of inspiration and encouragement to all students present at the roadshow.
"Moreover, the speakers' appearance today is also a visible proof that entering distinguished universities such as Oxford and Cambridge Universities is not impossible and is attainable."
These speakers, added the acting deputy principal, are national pride and applauds their contribution and commitment in helping to inspire and give back to Brunei by sharing their wisdom and experience with the rest of the students so that these students will in turn be inspired and encouraged to enter Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Other panel of speakers includes speakers Lim Jinn Yang, Abd Hanif Hj Mahadi and Lim Chiao Yin.
In her final note, she urged that all teachers and students present make full use of the resources available, such as yesterday's speakers, their lecturers and the info communication technology available to enhance learning and research for higher education.
It is her hope that everybody present yesterday shall benefit from this invaluable sharing of knowledge and for the students, she hopes the roadshow shall be a step forward to empower them to achieve their dreams.
"You are the architect of your own future so do continue to have big dreams, keeping in mind to always carefully plan the steps to attain it. Apart from academic effort, a good research in your options such as courses, universities and the profession that you wish to become, is imperative to ensure success in your future' concludes the acting deputy principal.
The Oxbridge Roadshow originates from a proposal by the Education Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Abd Rahman bin Dato Setia Hj Mohd Taib during his visit to the college in 2007 where he suggested for initiatives to be taken to promote top world universities such as Oxford and Cambridge to the college students.
This initiative was further instigated by the Permanent Secretary of Education (Core Education) Datin Paduka Dyg Apsah bte Hj Abd Majid who delegated the organisation of the first roadshow to the college as the host for the first Oxbridge Roadshow held in Brunei in 2007.
The first roadshow was conducted in August 2007, jointly by Maktab Duli Careers Service, now called The Higher Education Unit and the college's working committee.
Yesterday's roadshow saw the presence of the Acting Principal Dyg Hjh Seroja Hj Siau who also presented the certificate to the speakers. Also present were the college administration team, invited guests, teachers and students.
